American Mariachi is a musical about an all female Mariachi band in the 1970s in the U.S.. The creative team wanted to include the aesthetics of Mexican Folklorico and in particular its vibrant colors. I used my own family photographs from the 70s as inspiration for the day-wear costumes. I used modern and mid-20th century Mariachi uniforms as inspiration for the women’s Mariachi costumes to both honor heritage and to symbolize forging a new path for the future.
